Establishing a University Society to Share the Benefits of Vegetarianism

By Jiayi News Group, Formosa (Originally in Chinese)

[Jiayi] In the process of sharing the message of Alternative Living, fellow initiates from Jiayi noticed that many people in society acknowledged the vegetarian ideal but had limited knowledge about vegetarianism or how to prepare healthy and tasteful vegetarian food. This hindered them from eating vegetarian meals more frequently. Several Jiayi initiates working in the National Chung Cheng University therefore decided to establish a "Vegetarian Lifestyle Research and Practice Society," with the goal of holding vegetarian cooking classes, seminars on body, mind and soul, healthy lifestyles and other relevant activities that would encourage people to choose a healthy and compassionate way of life. Their plan also included a cooperative effort with others in the campus community who were interested in the vegetarian diet.

Immediately after submitting the application to establish the Society, they recruited dozens of teaching and working staff in the university who enthusiastically enrolled as members. The Society was officially founded on April 25, Golden Year 3 (2006). On the opening day, fellow initiates from the Jiayi Center prepared a sumptuous vegetarian feast for the members. Members from other groups, tempted by the delicious food, were drawn to the Society’s display to sample their delicacies. Taking advantage of the opportunity, fellow initiates gave each participant a document folder printed with the Alternative Living message and explained in detail the benefits of a vegetarian diet.

The newly founded Society attracted about 30 members, most of whom were not yet vegetarian, to participate in the cooking class every week. During each lesson, fellow initiates first introduced the nutritive values, characteristics, tips of preparation and where to buy the ingredients being used that day. Next followed a detailed explanation and demonstration of the cooking procedure. The students were very focused in the learning process and eagerly asked questions. Finally, their end products were taken home to be enjoyed with their family. As many students were not yet familiar with where to purchase ingredients, fellow initiates also offered the service of ordering necessary vegetarian supplies for them. When some already-vegetarian students in the university learned that a vegetarian society had been founded on the campus, they gladly used their leisure time to participate in activities held by the Society.

Before the Society was established, people interested in the vegetarian diet were scattered among the various departments of the Chung Cheng University campus. Now, these individuals have become a united force committed to introducing the vegetarian lifestyle to members of the different university departments and their families. Society members have also combined their individual talents to create an Internet website for their Society. (http://www.ccunix.ccu.edu.tw/~clubvege/) After each cooking class, they upload video clips, photos, notes, recipes and relevant information to share with the entire University and the people in the community. Through the far-reaching World Wide Web, they hope to share this compiled vegetarian information with an even greater number of people in society.
