Major Changes in Ireland in
“The Irish High School” Curriculum

Vegetarian philosophy and recipes now included as part of the “Learning for life” students’ study book.

In Ireland every year High School students between the ages of 14-15 sit for their first major school exam, known as “The Junior Certificate.” This year, for the first time ever, vegetarian philosophy and cooking has been included in its syllabus. Following this exam, ongoing tuition in vegetarianism is continued for the next three academic years until pupils complete their final exam and graduate.

In particular, one study book included in the curriculum is called: “Learning For Life,” in which students are given excellent information on why one should be a vegetarian and suitable recipes for vegetarians.

The following is an extract from the “Junior Certificate” students’ school book 2006:

“Why Vegetarian?
Many people choose to be vegetarian because it is believed to be more healthy. Vegetarians are less likely to be overweight or suffer from heart disease or bowel disorder.
Some religions favor a vegetarian diet.
Some people find the killing of animals for food objectionable.
Vegetables and cereals are easier and cheaper to produce for an ever-increasing population.”

So the future looks bright in Ireland, as tens of thousands of young people enter adult life, well educated in the cooking of vegetarian meals and the nutritional value derived from eating purely meat free diets. Once again, the Irish Quan Yin practitioners graciously thank Master for bestowing miraculous blessings amongst the Irish people and raising our consciousness to new and nobler ideals.
