As an international celebrity, Jackie Chan has been making use of his own fame for the benefit of the public. He has participated in many kinds of charitable activities and has been the key spokesperson at numerous charitable events. What’s more, he has produced short films to promote charity and actively took part in humanitarian programs. His actions have been recognized worldwide.

Promoting Quitting Smoking

Once appointed an international anti-smoking ambassador, Jackie Chan has been in the lead to promote a healthy life style and his efforts have been admired by many. Since he himself used to be a chain smoker, he shared with everyone his own experience in quitting smoking: “there is no secret to stop smoking, except your own determination, persistence and faith.” Not only quitting smoking himself, Jackie also encouraged his friends to do so. As a result, all sixteen members of the Jackie Chan Stuntmen Club have successfully quit smoking.

Promoting Environmental Protection

Jackie Chan has always been concerned about the environment. Whenever shooting a scene outside, he would never forget to clean up the garbage and tidy up the site. Recently, he planned to introduce innovative solar energy garbage cans and will contribute them to the Hong Kong government to assist in environmental protection.

Fighting Bird Flu

In Asia when the threat of bird flu broke out, Jackie went to such countries as Thailand, Korea and Japan where the bird flu was spreading, to support their governments and people to fight the disease. Before his trip, a journalist asked him if he was afraid of getting the disease, Jackie replied, “Even if there is bird flu, I will still go!” To avoid further spreading of the disease, Jackie accepted the offer from the UN Children’s Foundation and made a commercial with children from six different countries to educate the public on how to prevent bird flu.

Devoting to Charitable Activities

For many years, Jackie has been actively participating in all kinds of charitable works and contributed money and effort, which set a good example for people in the entertainment industry. A long time ago, Jackie was awarded the Silver Bauhinia Star in recognition of his significant contribution to the charitable work in Hong Kong. Lately, he devoted all his time apart from making movies to charitable activities. Last year, thirteen elementary schools funded by him started construction in a few poor mountainous areas in Qui Zhou, Mainland China. At the same time, he has applied for establishing the “Jackie Chan Foundation” in Mainland China. He said, “I hope that these activities can awaken people’s compassion to lend more help to those in need.” He also frequently makes contributions in person when serious natural disaster strikes. For example, when a broadcaster in Mainland China announced a severe cold warning, he immediately delivered five hundred down vests to the elderly.

Giving Half of his Possessions to the Public

Jackie Chan was recognized as one of the 10 Most Charitable Celebrities by Forbes Magazine in 2006. He further revealed that he will emulate the billionaires in the US, such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and will give half of his possessions to “Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation”. This foundation was established in 1988 and was intended to help young people in Hong Kong who were in need. Later it expanded its activities to support disaster relief, medical care and art performance.

Celebrities’ every action influences the public. As an international movie star, Jackie Chan has devoted himself to humanitarian works to help the poor and the needy. His positive public image will set a good example for the public and will bring positive influence to the society.
